Gratitude - 3 ways to show it BEFORE Thanksgiving

In 2 weeks we celebrate a holiday that we typically associate with the celebration enjoyed by the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag tribe, including Chief Massasoit, in 1621. It was a three-day Thanksgiving celebration of the fall harvest. However, Thanksgiving as we now know it wasn't declared an American holiday until 1777 when President George Washington proclaimed Thursday, November 26 to be "a day of public thanksgiving and prayer," to give thanks for the formation of a new nation and the establishment of our constitution.

We tend to associate Thanksgiving with Fall, feasting and fellowship with friends and family, and although it is a time to give thanks, many prefer to spend the day watching parades and football and preparing for Black Friday shopping which now begins in many stores on the afternoon of Thanksgiving.

So... before Thanksgiving day even arrives, here are three ways to show your gratitude in the spirit of the holiday:

1.  Write a letter to someone in your life that has influenced you, left a positive impression, or that you simply adore but seldom express it. Don't just send an email or a social media message. A handwritten letter is more personal and will mean so much more.

2.  Volunteer for an organization or cause in which you believe but might not currently  support. When you give just a few hours, you can make a difference FOR life.

3.  Visit with someone who might be lonely or just in need of some company. Do you know a retired person, a widow or widower, a relative, a single mother or father, a person recovering from illness or surgery  or a nursing home resident? Consider calling up someone who could use a kind smile and some encouraging words, and even take a meal or a snack to share with them.

By doing any one or all three of these, you will not only be showing gratitude, you will find joy through your actions.

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.
-John F. Kennedy

Tripp's Laugh Lines

Tips to our northern friends about our flora and fauna

The upper Midwest is a nice place to live; I grew up there. I was born in Cleveland and eventually spent the majority of my adult life in Chicago. I got smart when I was 38 years old and made plans to move to Naples in 2000. Now, completing my 14th year as a Floridian and more importantly, a Neapolitan, I can honestly say ... continued here!
